My Family — Vocabulary Lesson Slides

About This Resource

A 14-slide, teacher-led PowerPoint lesson that introduces all eight family words one at a time, then reviews them with a grid, a chant, and a preview of the speaking activity to come.

Overview

This slide deck is the main whole-class teaching tool for the unit. After a title slide, a learning-objectives slide, and a short warm-up, each of the seven individually-taught words (mother, father, sister, brother, baby, grandmother, grandfather) gets its own slide pairing the picture with the sentence "This is my ___," plus a "Listen & Point" cue and a "Practice" speaking prompt for partner work. The deck closes with a full review grid of all eight words (including "family"), an original chant, a "Who Is This?" speaking preview, and a closing slide. Every slide uses the collection's original artwork so the visuals match every other resource in the unit, and the objectives slide gently notes that families come in many forms.

Grade 1 35-45 Minutes Vocabulary Speaking

Lesson Sequence

  • 1. Project the deck for whole-class instruction at the start of the unit.
  • 2. Move through the warm-up and each word slide, having students repeat the target sentence aloud.
  • 3. Use the "Practice" prompt on each word slide for a 30-second partner check-in.
  • 4. Finish with the review grid and chant as a whole-class wrap-up, then preview the speaking activity slide to set up Resource 4.

Classroom Activities

  • Pause on the review grid slide and play "Vanishing Word": cover one icon at a time (with a sticky note on a printed copy, or by clicking away in Presenter view) and have students say which family member is missing.

Teacher Tips

Do not rush through all seven word slides in a single sitting with very young learners — splitting the deck across two shorter sessions keeps attention high and gives the words a chance to sink in before adding more.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to name family members in English.
  • Students will be able to produce the sentence "This is my ___." for each family member shown.
  • Students will be able to recite the family chant with correct rhythm and vocabulary.

Differentiation

Support: allow students to answer word slides with a single word ("Mother!") before building up to the full sentence. Extension: ask fast finishers to add a second detail to their answer, such as a describing word ("This is my funny sister.").

Assessment

Watch and listen during the "Practice" prompts on each word slide — a student who can produce the full sentence unprompted by the end of the deck has met the core vocabulary objective for this lesson.
