Grade 1 35-45 Minutes Observation Classification

Learning Objectives

  • Name the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.
  • Match each sense to the body part used for it.
  • Sort everyday actions and objects by which sense they mainly use.

How to Use This Resource

  • Presentation (8 min): Introduce each sense with its body part, using simple actions: point to eyes for sight, ears for hearing, nose for smell, tongue for taste, hands/skin for touch.
  • Senses Stations (12 min): In small groups, students rotate through 2-3 simple stations (e.g. listen to a sound, feel a texture, smell a scent) and say which sense they used.
  • Sorting Practice (8 min): As a class, sort a list of actions (e.g. "listening to music," "smelling bread") into the correct sense.
  • Independent Practice (7 min): Students complete the worksheet's matching and sorting sections.
  • Wrap-up (5 min): Ask a few students to share one thing they discovered at the senses stations.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Close your eyes and ring a small bell or clap your hands. Ask: "How did you know I did that if your eyes were closed?" Lead into today's topic: our senses.

Differentiation

Struggling students: focus on matching sense-to-body-part only, skip the sorting section. Advanced students: ask them to name one more example action for each sense.

Assessment

Observe participation and correct sense-naming at the stations; check the worksheet matching and sorting activities.

Teacher Tips

Be mindful of any student allergies or sensory sensitivities before choosing smell/taste station items, and always offer a way to opt out of any single station.
