Learning Objectives
- Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to:
- - Identify and say the names of 10 wild animals
- - Produce the sentence pattern "I see a ___."
- - Respond physically and verbally to simple riddles and prompts about wild animals.
How to Use This Resource
- Teach as a full 35–45 minute lesson, or split across two shorter sessions
- (vocabulary + practice/game). Speaker guidance is built into the slide text
- (e.g., "Teacher: Point to a picture..."). The Movement Game slide works well
- as a mid-lesson brain break.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- Warm-Up Activities Animal Walk: Call out an animal name. Have students walk like that animal across the room. Say "Walk like an elephant!" or "Jump like a monkey!"
- Guess the Sound: Play a short animal sound audio clip. Ask students, "What is it?" They call out the animal name.
Differentiation
To be sure every Grade 1 student stays engaged and learns effectively, you can differentiate the wild animals ESL lesson into three proficiency tiers: Emergent (absolute beginners), Developing (mid-level), and Ready for Extension (advanced/fast finishers).
Assessment
Write the Animal Name - 4 items, independent recall/spelling
Circle the Correct Word – 3 items, word discrimination with a distractor
Finish the Sentence – 2 items, "It is a ___." sentence completion
True or False – 2 items, content knowledge about the animals
Teacher Tips
Assign a distinct, simple gesture to every single animal (e.g., hands like big ears for an elephant, swinging an arm like a trunk; scratching sides for a monkey). Whenever you say the word, do the action, and require the students to do it too. This ensures total engagement, helps kinetic learners, and is a lifesaver for absolute beginners who don't understand the English words yet.
