Grade 1 35-45 minutes Geometry Shape Recognition

Learning Objectives

  • Name six 2D shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon.
  • Count the number of sides and corners of each shape.
  • Identify these shapes in everyday classroom objects.

How to Use This Resource

  • Presentation (8 min): Show each cut-out shape one at a time. Name it, then count its sides and corners together as a class, tracing each side with a finger.
  • Practice (10 min): Play "Shape Hunt" — students look around the classroom and name one real object for each shape (e.g. clock = circle, door = rectangle).
  • Sorting (7 min): In small groups, students sort a mixed pile of paper shapes into groups by name.
  • Independent Practice (10 min): Students complete the worksheet: naming shapes, counting sides/corners, and a shape-counting picture.
  • Wrap-up (5 min): Quick quiz: hold up a shape, students call out its name and side count together.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Hold up a round plate or clock and ask "What shape is this?" Then hold up a book and ask the same. Introduce today's focus: shapes all around us.

Differentiation

Struggling students: focus on circle, square, and triangle only, skipping pentagon/hexagon. Advanced students: ask them to find and draw two more real-life examples of each shape for homework.

Assessment

Observe accuracy during the Shape Hunt and sorting activity; check the worksheet's naming, side/corner counts, and shape-counting section.

Teacher Tips

Let students physically trace each shape's sides with a finger while counting aloud — the physical action helps the side count "stick" far better than just looking at it.
