Learning Objectives
- Add two 2-digit numbers where the ones digits total 10 or more, requiring regrouping ("carrying") into the tens place.
- Explain the regrouping step using place value (ones and tens).
- Solve real-world word problems that require 2-digit addition with regrouping.
How to Use This Resource
- Presentation (10 min): Model 27 + 15 using a place-value chart: add the ones (7 + 5 = 12), regroup 10 ones as 1 ten, write 2 in the ones column and carry the 1 ten, then add the tens (1 + 2 + 1 = 4) for a final answer of 42.
- Guided Practice (10 min): Work through 2-3 more problems together on the board, having students say each step out loud ("7 plus 5 is 12, write 2, carry 1").
- Partner Practice (8 min): In pairs, students solve 2 problems together using base-ten blocks or a place-value chart, checking each other's regrouping step.
- Independent Practice (10 min): Students complete the worksheet's addition problems and word problems.
- Wrap-up (5 min): Cold-call a few students to explain their regrouping step for one problem.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- Write 8 + 5 on the board. Ask students to solve it, then ask: "What if it were 28 + 5? What changes?" Lead into today's focus on adding bigger numbers.
Differentiation
Struggling students: provide a printed place-value chart with ones/tens columns to write directly into for every problem. Advanced students: include one 3-addend or near-100 problem as a bonus challenge.
Assessment
Check accuracy and correct regrouping notation on the completed worksheet; listen during wrap-up for a clear place-value explanation of the carrying step.
Teacher Tips
The single most common error is forgetting to add the carried 1 into the tens column — remind students to always check: "Did I add my little 1?" before finalizing an answer
