Big Multiplication: Three-Digit by Two-Digit Numbers

About This Resource

A complete Grade 5 math lesson pack on multiplying three-digit numbers by two-digit numbers: estimating first, the area model, partial products, the standard algorithm with the zero placeholder, checking answers and solving real-world problems. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn to multiply a three-digit number by a two-digit number such as 243 × 36. They estimate first (240 × 40 = 9,600), break the problem into partial products with an area model, then move to the standard algorithm: multiply by the ones, write a zero placeholder, multiply by the tens and add. They solve twelve problems, find and fix mistakes and use multiplication in real-world problems about seats, books and savings.

Learning Objectives

  • Multiply a three-digit number by a two-digit number using the standard algorithm.
  • Use area models and partial products to explain the algorithm.
  • Estimate products to check that answers are reasonable.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and model 243 × 36 with an area model, then with the standard algorithm.
  • Use the flashcards for vocabulary and estimation practice, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Estimate race: show a problem for five seconds; students write an estimate before solving.
  • Error detective: give worked examples with one mistake each; pairs find and fix the error.
  • Real-life multiplication: students find the cost of 24 class tickets at $125 each.

Differentiation

Support: use area models and multiplication charts. Challenge: multiply four-digit by two-digit numbers and create word problems for a partner.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check accuracy and estimation (answer keys included). Use the rubric for explanations and problem solving.

Teacher Tips

Remind students why the zero placeholder is there: when multiplying by the tens digit, they are really multiplying by a multiple of ten (30, not 3).
