Count by Fives: Telling Time to Five Minutes

About This Resource

A complete Grade 2 math lesson pack on telling time to the nearest five minutes: the hour hand and minute hand, counting by fives around the clock, reading and drawing times, writing digital times, half past and quarter past, and a.m. and p.m. in a daily routine. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn to read analog clocks to the nearest five minutes. They review the short hour hand and the long minute hand, count by fives around the clock face to find the minutes, read the hour from the number the hour hand has just passed, and write times in digital form (7:25). They read and draw clock times, match analog and digital clocks, use quarter past, half past and quarter to, and sort daily activities into a.m. and p.m.

Grade 2 (ages 7–8) 50 minutes Time skip counting by 5s reading clocks number sense daily routines

Learning Objectives

  • Read and write time to the nearest five minutes on analog and digital clocks.
  • Count by fives to find the minutes shown by the minute hand.
  • Use a.m. and p.m. to describe times in a daily routine.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and count by fives around a large clock together.
  • Use the flashcards for quick practice, then complete the worksheet with student clocks if you have them.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the my-day homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Human clock: twelve children hold numbers in a circle; two children are the hands and move to show a time the class calls out.
  • Clock bingo: students fill a grid with times; call out times on a big clock and students cover the matching time.
  • Time detectives: students write the time at the start of each activity during the day.

Differentiation

Support: practise o'clock and half past first, then count by fives with a labeled clock. Challenge: find elapsed time in five-minute steps, such as from 3:15 to 3:40.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check reading, drawing and writing times (answer keys included). Use the rubric for clock drawing and the my-day homework.

Teacher Tips

Stick small labels 5, 10, 15 … 55 outside the numbers on your classroom clock. Students quickly connect each number on the clock to its minute value.
