Grade 3 (ages 8–9), beginner to pre-intermediate 45 minutes Writing sentences vocabulary for places weather and activities reading short texts ordering a text

Learning Objectives

  • Name the parts of a postcard: greeting, message and ending.
  • Use words for places, weather and activities in simple sentences about a trip.
  • Write a short postcard of four or five sentences with a greeting and an ending.

Lesson Procedure

  • Teach the words with the slides and the picture flashcards.
  • Show a real or model postcard and read it aloud together.
  • Use the worksheet for guided and independent practice, then give the quiz and score it with the rubric.
  • Send the homework page home and use the flashcards for review.

Assessment

Check that the postcard has a greeting, a message of at least four sentences and an ending. The rubric gives four levels for structure, vocabulary, sentences and neatness.

Differentiation

Support: give students the sentence frames and the picture word cards. Challenge: ask students to add a question to their friend, such as 'What are you doing?'

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Postcard swap: students write a postcard to a classmate and read the one they get.
  • Picture postcard: students draw a place on one side and write the message on the other.
  • Weather report: students say the weather and what they do in it.

Teacher Tips

Bring a real postcard if you can. Use sentence frames on the board: 'Dear ___,', 'I am at the ___.', 'The weather is ___.', 'I like to ___.' and 'Love, ___.' Praise first drafts and correct only one or two mistakes at a time.
