Overview

Children use the present simple to talk about things that happen every day. They finish by writing about a family member's day.

Grade 3 ESL (ages 8–9), A1–A2 45 minutes Grammar spelling speaking asking questions writing

Learning Objectives

  • Use the present simple to talk about habits and daily routines.
  • Add -s, -es or -ies to verbs after he, she and it.
  • Make negatives and questions with do, does, don't and doesn't.

How to Use This Resource

  • Mime your morning routine and say each sentence: "I get up. I brush my teeth. I eat breakfast."
  • Teach the rules with the slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the family routine homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Routine charades: a child mimes a routine and the class says "She brushes her teeth!"
  • Find someone who: children ask "Do you walk to school?" and write names.
  • Time line: children put routine cards in order on a clock and describe their day.

Differentiation

Support: focus on I and he/she sentences with -s only. Challenge: children write about a family member's day with negatives and frequency words such as always and never.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check forms and spelling. Use the rubric for the writing in activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Point to the -s every time you say he, she or it. A quick "he, she, it, add the s!" chant helps children remember.
