From Frogspawn to Frog: The Life Cycle of a Frog

About This Resource

A complete Grade 3 science pack on the frog life cycle and metamorphosis: frogspawn, tadpole, tadpole with legs, froglet and adult frog. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, picture flashcards, a rubric, editable slides and Word files, and answer keys.

Overview

Students follow a frog through its life cycle: eggs (frogspawn) laid in water, a tadpole that swims with its tail and breathes with gills, back legs and then front legs growing, a froglet whose tail gets shorter, and an adult frog that breathes with lungs and can live on land. They learn that this big change in body shape is called metamorphosis and that frogs are amphibians, living part of their life in water and part on land.

Grade 3 (ages 8–9) 50 minutes Sequencing comparing scientific vocabulary explaining changes labelling diagrams

Learning Objectives

  • Name and order the stages of a frog's life cycle: frogspawn, tadpole, tadpole with legs, froglet and adult frog.
  • Describe how a tadpole changes as it grows (legs, tail, gills and lungs) and explain the word metamorphosis.
  • Explain why frogs are amphibians and why the frog life cycle starts again.

Lesson Procedure

  • Teach the lesson with the slides and the lesson plan; show the stage pictures as you tell the frog's story.
  • Use the worksheet for guided and independent practice.
  • Give the quiz at the end of the lesson or the next day, and use the rubric for the written answers.
  • Send the homework page home and use the picture flashcards to review the stages.

Assessment

The quiz (15 points) checks stages, order and changes. The rubric gives four levels for naming the stages, ordering them, explaining the changes and using science words.

Differentiation

Support: give students the stage flashcards to hold while they do the worksheet. Challenge: ask students to explain why a tadpole cannot live on land but an adult frog can.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Life cycle wheel: students cut out the stage flashcards and glue them in a circle with arrows.
  • Act it out: students crouch as eggs, wiggle as tadpoles, add legs, then hop as frogs.
  • Compare cycles: draw the plant life cycle next to the frog life cycle and find what is the same.

Teacher Tips

Use the word metamorphosis often and point to what changes each time: legs grow, the tail gets shorter, and gills are replaced by lungs. If you can, show a short video of real tadpoles at different stages.
