Grade 1 Math Lesson Plan: Patterns — Repeating Patterns and Number Patterns

Learning Objectives

• Copy, continue and create repeating patterns (AB, AAB, ABB, ABC).
• Find the part of a pattern that repeats (the core).
• Find a missing part of a pattern.
• Continue number patterns that count on by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, and count back by 2s.
• Describe a pattern in simple words, e.g. "red, blue, red, blue".

Lesson Procedure

• Lesson 1 — Repeating patterns (40 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
• Lesson 2 — Find the core and the missing part (40 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
• Lesson 3 — Number patterns and making patterns (40 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
• Use the matching PowerPoint, worksheet and assessment from this pack — the plan refers to their slide and part numbers.

Differentiation

Support: Use real blocks for every question before drawing. Challenge: Make ABC and AABB patterns, or patterns that change two things (color AND shape). English language learners: Teach the sentence: "The pattern is ___, ___. Next is ___."

Teacher Tips

Patterns are everywhere: clothes, tiles, songs, the days of the week. Point them out every day. Always ask students to SAY the pattern aloud — it helps them hear the repeat.
