Grade 10 Future Plans and Ambitions Lesson Plan

About This Resource

A two-period lesson plan for Grade 10 ESL classes that teaches career and further-study vocabulary alongside going to and will for talking about the future. It walks a teacher through vocabulary presentation, grammar instruction, a reading passage, a speaking interview, and a writing task, with clear timing and teacher scripting throughout.

Overview

This lesson plan covers the full arc of the Future Plans and Ambitions topic across two class periods. Period 1 introduces vocabulary such as ambition, career path, further education, vocational training, entrepreneur, scholarship, internship, promotion, and qualification, then teaches the difference between going to (a plan already decided) and will (a prediction, promise, or spontaneous decision). Period 2 moves students through a reading passage comparing two students with different future paths, a partner interview about future plans, and a guided writing task in which students plan and write their own future-plan paragraph. Each stage includes a suggested time allocation, materials, and step-by-step teacher instructions.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to use going to and will correctly to talk about future plans and predictions.
  • Students will be able to use at least eight vocabulary words related to careers and further study.
  • Students will be able to ask and answer questions about future plans in a short interview.
  • Students will be able to write a short paragraph describing their own future plans.

Lesson Procedure

  • Read through both periods before teaching to decide how to pace them against your own timetable. Prepare the vocabulary and grammar materials referenced in the Materials list (this topic's Vocabulary Worksheet, Grammar Worksheet, and PowerPoint work well alongside this plan). Follow the procedure tables in order, adjusting wording for your class's proficiency level. Use the Differentiation and Assessment sections to decide how you will support weaker students and check understanding before moving on.

Assessment

Use teacher observation during the Grammar Worksheet and Speaking Activity to check accurate use of going to and will. Review the Writing Activity paragraph for correct grammar and vocabulary use. For a more formal check, pair this lesson with the topic's Review Quiz or Grading Rubric.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Provide a word bank and a sentence frame ("After I finish school, I am going to ... because ...") for the writing task, and allow students to prepare their speaking answers in writing first.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete each stage of the lesson as written, using the sentence frames and vocabulary provided.
CHALLENGE: Ask students to include a backup plan ("If that doesn't work out, I will ...") in their writing, or to ask a follow-up question during the speaking interview.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • As a five-minute warm-up before Period 1, ask students to call out any jobs or further-study paths they already know the English word for. This surfaces existing vocabulary and creates a natural bridge into the new word list.

Teacher Tips

Many students find the going to / will distinction genuinely confusing, since both can describe the future. Keep coming back to the core rule throughout the lesson — going to for an already-decided plan, will for a prediction, promise, or in-the-moment decision — and use real classroom examples rather than abstract explanation.
