Grade 2 Math Flashcards and Task Cards: Multiplication Facts

How to Present

• Print pages 1–6 and cut each page in half to make 12 A5 cards for the board. Print pages 7–8 on card and cut out the 24 task cards (1–8 pictures, 9–16 facts, 17–24 word problems). Give each child the recording sheet (page 9); cut off the answer key for self-checking.

Games & Speaking Activities

• Hold up cards 7 and 8 (row, column) and ask children to stand in rows and columns.
• Use the task cards for a table rotation: 4 cards per table, 5 minutes per table.

Teacher Tips

The most common mistake is adding instead of multiplying: children write 3 × 4 = 7. Do not correct it with a rule — ask "Show me 3 groups of 4 with counters," and make children say the whole sentence: "3 groups of 4 is 12. 3 times 4 equals 12." Some textbooks in Asia read 3 × 4 the other way ("4, three times"); because of turn-around facts the answer is the same, so choose one way for your class and accept both in children's work.

Differentiation

Support: Let children use counters and paper plates for every question, and give them the Times Tables Chart with the rows they have not learned yet covered. Teach the 2s, 10s and 5s first and add the 3s and 4s only when these are secure. Use sentence frames ("There are ___ groups of ___.") and the fact tracker so children can see their own progress. Pair a child who is new to English with a partner who models the key sentences.

Extension: Find all the arrays for 12 (1 × 12, 2 × 6, 3 × 4 …), solve two-step problems (3 boxes of 10 eggs; 5 eggs are used), write a word problem for 4 × 7 and swap it with a partner, or play Fact Rocket! with all five tables in Mix mode.

Assessment

The recording sheet shows which task cards each child can do; the answer key covers all 24 cards.
