A 10-slide teaching presentation that introduces the big ideas behind the Multiply and Divide up to 1,000 unit — equal groups, arrays, repeated addition, and the connection between multiplication and division — before students move into the unit's individual skill worksheets. Overview

This presentation builds the conceptual foundation that the rest of the unit depends on. Rather than jumping straight into times tables, it slows down to show students what multiplication actually means: a fast way of adding equal groups. Concrete visuals (mango bowls, dot groups, an array of dots, a bus-seats grid) carry most of the explanation so that English language learners can follow the ideas even before they have the vocabulary to describe them. The deck also makes the connection between multiplication and division explicit through a fact-family example, and closes with a roadmap slide that previews the six skills students will meet across the unit, so both teacher and students know where the lesson is heading.

Project the presentation at the start of the unit's first lesson (this deck is designed to accompany the Grade 2 Multiply and Divide up to 1,000 Lesson Plan). Move through the slides in order: the opening slides build the idea of equal groups and arrays, the middle slides connect multiplication to repeated addition and then to division, and the roadmap slide can be used to tell students what is coming next in the unit. Pause on the guided practice slide (slide 8) and have students work out both word problems on mini whiteboards or scrap paper before revealing the answers — the speaker notes give you the worked answers to check against.

Classroom Activities

Fact Family Match: after slide 6, give pairs of students four number cards (for example 3, 4, and 12) and ask them to write all four related facts (3×4=12, 4×3=12, 12÷4=3, 12÷3=4) on mini whiteboards, then swap number sets with another pair and repeat.

Teacher Tips

Don't rush past slide 6 (the fact-family cards) — many students meet multiplication and division as two completely separate topics and never notice they're connected until someone points it out directly. A minute spent on "notice these are the same three numbers" here pays off later when students reach the division worksheets.

Support: Read each word problem on the guided practice slide aloud slowly and point to the visual (the dot groups, the bus-seat grid) while reading, and allow students to answer by drawing groups rather than writing a number sentence.
On-Level: Students follow the slides as designed, answering the guided practice problems on whiteboards before moving to independent worksheet practice.
Challenge: After the fact-family slide, ask early finishers to build their own fact family from a different multiplication fact and be ready to share it with the class.

Assessment

Use the guided practice slide as an informal check — students hold up their whiteboards after each word problem so you can see at a glance who has the idea and who needs more support before independent practice begins.
