Lesson Sequence
- Present as a whole-class introduction before any worksheet in this topic. Walk through the Place Value Chart slide first, then the block legend, then the 6 worked examples — pause on 205, 108, and 950 specifically, since they each contain at least one zero place, which is the concept students most often get wrong (treating a zero place as if it doesn't exist rather than as a real placeholder).
Classroom Activities
- After the Comparing Numbers slide, give pairs of students two new 3-digit numbers (written on cards, no blocks shown) and have them state out loud which is greater and why, using the "compare hundreds first" language modeled on the slide.
Teacher Tips
The zero-placeholder numbers (205, 108, 950) are the most instructionally valuable slides in the deck — a student who can correctly read "0 tens" in 205 without skipping to the ones has genuinely internalized place value, not just pattern-matched block-counting.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the hundreds, tens, and ones place in a 3-digit number.
- Students will be able to read a base-ten block diagram and state the number it represents.
- Students will be able to write a number in expanded form and word form.
- Students will be able to compare two 3-digit numbers using place value reasoning (compare hundreds first).
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Keep the Place Value Chart and block legend slides visible/printed during worksheet time.
ON-LEVEL: Proceeds through the deck as designed.
CHALLENGE: After the Quick Check slide, ask students to build 508 (a number not shown in the deck) verbally, stating each place value before any worksheet practice.
