On Day 5 before the quiz, do a rapid "zero check" round: show 5 numbers each with exactly one zero place (in different positions — hundreds, tens, or ones), and have students state all three digit counts out loud, explicitly saying "zero" for the empty place rather than skipping it.

Teacher Tips

Unlike a grammar rule that's taught once and then applied, the zero-placeholder misconception in this unit tends to resurface in a NEW form on each new resource (skipped in a block diagram on Day 1-2, skipped in expanded form on Day 3, skipped in a word problem's "how many tens" question on Day 4).
