Grade 2 Place Value Unit Lesson Plan

About This Resource

A 2-page teacher lesson plan tying the whole Grade 2 Place Value to 1,000 topic together into one 5-day sequence — objectives, a day-by-day plan mapped to the actual resources in this topic, a common-trouble-spots guide covering the topic's most persistent misconceptions, a vocabulary quick-reference, and a print/prep checklist.

Overview

This is the connective document for the Grade 2 Place Value topic: instead of a teacher having to figure out the order and pacing of the PowerPoint, three worksheets/activities, flashcards, and the review quiz on their own, this lesson plan lays out a full 5-day sequence (Introduce → Practice → Practice → Apply → Apply & Assess) and names the topic's most common and persistent error — treating a zero place value as if it doesn't exist — as the single thing to watch for most closely across every day, not just once.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify the hundreds, tens, and ones place in a 3-digit number, including when a place is zero.
  • Students will be able to read and build base-ten block representations of numbers up to 999.
  • Students will be able to convert a number between standard form, expanded form, and word form.
  • Students will be able to compare two 3-digit numbers using place value reasoning (compare hundreds first).
  • Students will be able to score at least 16/20 (of the fixed-answer portion) on the cumulative Review Quiz.

Lesson Procedure

  • Read through once before starting the unit to see the full arc, then use the Lesson Sequence table as your daily plan and the Print & Prep checklist the day before you start teaching. The Common Trouble Spots table is worth reviewing before every single day of the unit, not just once — the zero-placeholder issue and the digit-vs-place-value confusion both resurface across multiple resources, not just one.

Assessment

This lesson plan doesn't introduce new graded content itself — it points to each worksheet's own answer key for fixed-answer scoring, to the Place Value Review Quiz for the cumulative summative score, and to the Place Value Unit Grading Rubric for every open-response item (the Draw the Blocks Challenge, the Write Your Own Problem Challenge, and both Digit Challenge bonuses).

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Follow the unit-wide SUPPORT guidance in the lesson plan's Differentiation section (keep the Place Value Chart visible, use only the 5 "clean" flashcards before zero-placeholder ones, allow blocks visible during quiz Part B).
ON-LEVEL: Follows the 5-day sequence as written.
CHALLENGE: Layer in each worksheet's own Bonus/Challenge extensions, as listed in the Differentiation section.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • On Day 5 before the quiz, do a rapid "zero check" round: show 5 numbers each with exactly one zero place (in different positions — hundreds, tens, or ones), and have students state all three digit counts out loud, explicitly saying "zero" for the empty place rather than skipping it.

Teacher Tips

Unlike a grammar rule that's taught once and then applied, the zero-placeholder misconception in this unit tends to resurface in a NEW form on each new resource (skipped in a block diagram on Day 1-2, skipped in expanded form on Day 3, skipped in a word problem's "how many tens" question on Day 4). Treat it as a running thread across the whole week, not a single lesson.
