Grade 3 Weather and Seasons Quiz
About This Resource
A four-section quiz that checks weather and season vocabulary and the "It's..." / "It's the ___ season" sentence patterns, with picture matching, sentence choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short writing.
Overview
This quiz gives a fuller picture of what students have learned across the topic than any single worksheet, moving from picture recognition to independent writing. Section A checks vocabulary recognition through picture matching. Section B checks that students can choose the correct weather or season sentence for a picture. Section C is a grammar-focused fill-in-the-blank that specifically tests whether students can tell "It's..." (for weather) apart from "It's the ___ season" (for seasons) — a distinction that matters for accuracy but is easy for learners to blur. Section D asks students to write two original sentences describing real weather and season conditions, checking whether they can produce the language independently rather than just recognise or select it.

Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify weather and season vocabulary from pictures.
- Students will be able to select the correct weather or season sentence for a picture.
- Students will be able to distinguish "It's..." from "It's the ___ season" in context.
- Students will be able to write two original sentences describing real weather and season conditions.
How to Use This Resource
- Use at the end of the Weather and Seasons Lesson Plan, or as a short formal check at the start of the following lesson once students have had time to practise with the Vocabulary Worksheet, Grammar Worksheet, and Speaking Activity. Administer individually under quiet conditions for the most accurate picture of what each student has learned. Section D can be marked more leniently than Sections A–C, since it asks for original language rather than a single correct answer.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- Before handing out the quiz, do a 2-minute oral warm-up: say a weather or season word and have the whole class respond chorally with the correct sentence pattern ("It's..." or "It's the ___ season"). This primes the Section C distinction without giving away any of the quiz's actual answers.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Allow students to complete Sections A and B only, or provide a word bank on the board for Section D. Read Section C's sentence starters aloud if reading the instructions independently is a barrier.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all four sections independently within a normal class period.
CHALLENGE: In Section D, ask students to write three or four sentences instead of two, including at least one sentence that compares two different seasons.
Assessment
Mark Sections A–C against the answer key for an objective score, and assess Section D more holistically using the criteria in the Weather and Seasons Grading Rubric if you want a documented score for writing.
Teacher Tips
Section C is the best diagnostic on this quiz — a student who does well on Sections A and B but struggles with Section C usually knows the vocabulary but hasn't yet internalised which sentence pattern goes with weather versus seasons. That's a clear signal to revisit the Grammar Worksheet's "Grammar Reminder" box with them individually.
