A pair speaking activity in which students take turns being a "weather reporter," drawing a weather card and a season card at random and giving a short spoken report for their partner to record. Includes ready-to-cut vocabulary cards and a recording table.

Overview

This activity turns the topic's core sentence frame — "Today it's (weather). It's the (season) season." — into a genuine information-gap speaking task. Because each partner draws a weather card and a season card without showing the other, the listener has a real reason to pay attention rather than already knowing the answer. The page includes all 12 vocabulary words as small cut-out cards, a "My Weather Reports" table for recording three rounds of a partner's reports, a Report Back stage that has students share what they heard with the wider class, and an Extra Challenge for students ready to add detail or make comparisons between seasons.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to give a short spoken weather report using the target sentence frame.
Students will be able to listen to a partner's report and record the weather and season they heard.
Students will be able to report a partner's weather report back to the class.
Students will be able to extend a basic report with an added detail or a comparison between seasons.

How to Use This Resource

Print one copy per pair (or reuse a set of the Flashcards instead of cutting out the cards on the page). Model the activity yourself first with a confident student before pairs begin. Students work in pairs: one cuts out and shuffles the cards while the other watches, then they swap roles after each round so both partners get practice reporting and practice listening. Circulate while pairs work, and use the Weather and Seasons Grading Rubric if you want to score the speaking itself.

Classroom Activity Ideas

Turn the Report Back stage into a quick class chart: as pairs share what they heard, tally how many reports mentioned each season on the board. Finish by asking, "Which season did we hear about the most today?" for a light, low-stakes speaking-and-listening wrap-up.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Let students refer to the Grammar Reminder box from the Grammar Worksheet, or keep the sentence frame written on the board throughout the activity. Reduce to only the 8 weather cards for a first round if the full 12-card set is too much at once.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all three rounds independently using the full sentence frame.
CHALLENGE: Students attempt the Extra Challenge, adding a second detail to their report or comparing two seasons using a comparative sentence.

Assessment

Circulate during the paired practice and note which students produce the full sentence frame independently versus those who need prompting. Use the Weather and Seasons Grading Rubric for a more formal score of the speaking itself, focusing on the Communication & Participation and Describing Weather and Seasons criteria.

Teacher Tips

Remind students to draw their cards without looking, and to keep them hidden from their partner until the report is finished — the whole activity depends on the listener not already knowing the answer. A quick class reminder before starting prevents pairs from just showing each other the cards and skipping the speaking.
