Grade 4 The Water Cycle Grading Rubric
About This Resource
A teacher assessment tool for evaluating student understanding of the water cycle across four criteria — identifying the stages, describing the process, using scientific vocabulary, and connecting the cycle to real life — with three clear performance levels and a ready-to-use class tracking grid.
Overview
This rubric gives teachers a consistent way to evaluate student work from any of the Water Cycle resources — the Diagram Labeling Worksheet, the Mini Water Cycle in a Bag observation activity, the reading activity, or classroom discussion and the quiz. Each of the four criteria is described at three levels (Meets Expectations, Developing, Needs Support) in plain, specific language rather than vague scoring bands, so feedback can be given directly from the rubric's wording. An optional simple numeric scoring guide, a teacher's tip for low-effort daily tracking, and a 13-row class tracking grid are included for schools that want a running record across the topic.

How to Use This Resource
- Choose one or two pieces of student work — such as the labeled diagram and the observation activity — that best represent a student's understanding of this topic. Read across each row and decide which column best matches what the student showed, then circle or highlight the matching level for each criterion. Use the class tracking grid to keep a quick running record across the whole class, and share feedback with students using the rubric's own language.
Teacher Tips
Keep a simple class checklist with students' names down the side and the four criteria across the top. A quick tick, dash, or circle during independent practice is often enough to complete this rubric for the whole class without extra marking time after the lesson.
