Grade 5 Area and Perimeter Concepts PowerPoint
About This Resource
A 12-slide teaching PowerPoint that introduces perimeter and area to Grade 5 students,
from vocabulary and formulas through worked examples, guided and independent practice,
real-life connections, and a closing exit ticket. Designed to be taught directly from
the slides at the start of this unit.
Overview
This presentation carries a full lesson's worth of direct instruction in a clear,
consistent visual sequence: learning objectives, key vocabulary with plain-language
definitions, a concept slide and worked example for perimeter, the same pair for area,
a note on squares as a special case of rectangles, real-life connections, an
independent practice slide, and a two-question exit ticket to close the lesson. Every
shape used in a diagram is labelled clearly, and the worked examples show every step of
the calculation rather than jumping straight to the answer, which matters for students
who are still building confidence with the formulas.

Lesson Sequence
- Teach this presentation at the start of the Area and Perimeter topic, before students
- attempt the Practice Worksheet. Slide 8 (Guided Practice) and slide 11 (Independent
- Practice) are designed as pause points — stop and let students work with a partner or
- independently before revealing further slides or moving the class discussion forward.
- The final slide is a two-question exit ticket; collect student answers on paper or
- sticky notes as a quick check before moving into the worksheets in this collection.
Classroom Activities
- Think-Pair-Share on slide 10 (Where Do We Use This?): before showing the bullet points,
- ask students to think of their own example of somewhere in their home, school, or
- community where area or perimeter matters, discuss with a partner, then share with the
- class before you reveal the slide's examples.
Teacher Tips
When you reach the worked examples (slides 6 and 7), cover the final answer line and
ask students to predict it before you reveal it. This turns passive viewing into an
active thinking moment and gives you an immediate, informal check of understanding.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to define perimeter and area in their own words.
- Students will be able to state and apply the formulas for the perimeter and area of a rectangle.
- Students will be able to recognise a square as a rectangle with four equal sides and apply the simplified formulas.
- Students will be able to connect area and perimeter to real-life situations such as fencing, flooring, and building.
Differentiation
Support: Keep the vocabulary slide visible (or printed) throughout the lesson as a
reference. Pair students who need more support with a partner for both the guided and
independent practice slides rather than working alone.
On-Level: Students follow the presentation as designed, attempting the guided and
independent practice questions with a partner or independently.
Challenge: During independent practice, ask early finishers to write their own
similar question for a partner to solve, using different measurements.
Assessment
Informal observation during the guided and independent practice slides
The exit ticket on the final slide, collected as a quick formative check
Follow-up with the Practice Worksheet for a more formal check of the same skills
