Grade 5 Free Time and Hobbies Flashcards
About This Resource
A set of 12 print-ready flashcards, one for each hobby and free-time word in the topic, each showing a clear picture and the word in large print.
Overview
These flashcards give teachers a flexible, reusable tool that works across the whole topic — vocabulary drilling, the Guided Practice stage of the Lesson Plan, the Speaking Activity's interview prompts, and quick review games. Each card shows one large, clear icon and its word underneath in bold, high-contrast text, sized to stay readable even in a smaller printed card after cutting. The full set covers all 12 hobbies taught in this topic: reading, drawing, swimming, cycling, playing football, playing badminton, dancing, singing, cooking, fishing, gardening, and watching movies.

How to Present
- Print, laminate if possible for repeated use, and cut along the card borders. Use as a whole-class vocabulary drill by holding up each card and having students say the word chorally, or hand a set to each pair for the Guided Practice and Speaking Activity stages of the Lesson Plan. The cards also work well for quick review games such as flashing a card briefly and having students race to say the hobby.
Games & Speaking Activities
- Play a quick "Flash and Guess" game: hold up a card for just one second before hiding it again, and have students call out the hobby they saw. It sharpens quick word recognition and adds energy to a vocabulary review.
Teacher Tips
Keep one flashcard set uncut as a permanent teacher reference for whole-class drilling, and cut a second set into individual cards for pair and small-group work — reprinting a torn or lost card is easy since the file is saved and ready to print again.
Learning Objectives
- tudents will be able to recognise and say all 12 hobby and free-time words from a picture prompt.
- Students will be able to use the flashcards to ask and answer questions about hobbies with a partner.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Start with a smaller subset of 4–6 cards for students who are still building basic vocabulary, then add more once those are secure.
ON-LEVEL: Use the full 12-card set for all whole-class and pair activities.
CHALLENGE: Ask stronger students to make a full sentence about the picture on each card, rather than just naming it, when using the cards for pair practice.
Assessment
Use informally during oral drilling to gauge which words individual students are still hesitant with. For a more formal check, follow up with the Free Time and Hobbies Quiz.
