Grade 5 Free Time and Hobbies Lesson Plan

About This Resource

A complete 40–45 minute lesson plan that introduces 12 free-time activities and hobbies, then builds up to students asking and answering about their real hobbies using like/enjoy/love and frequency adverbs.

Overview

This lesson plan walks a teacher through a full sequence for the Free Time and Hobbies topic: a silent-mime warm-up, vocabulary presentation with the PowerPoint, guided practice with flashcards, independent worksheet practice, a partner-interview speaking task, and a wrap-up check. Along the way it models two related grammar patterns that matter for this grade level — using the -ing form after like, enjoy, and love, and using frequency adverbs (always, usually, sometimes, never) to answer "How often do you ___?" The plan explains what to say, what to model, and how long each stage should take, so a teacher can pick it up and teach the full lesson without extra preparation.

Grade 5 40-45 Minutes Free Time and Hobbies Lesson Plan

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to name 12 free-time activities and hobbies.
  • Students will be able to ask and answer "What do you like doing in your free time?" using a gerund after like, enjoy, or love.
  • Students will be able to ask and answer "How often do you (activity)?" using a frequency adverb.
  • Students will be able to talk about their own hobbies and ask a partner about theirs.

Lesson Procedure

  • Read through the lesson plan before class and gather the materials listed (Vocabulary PowerPoint, Flashcards, Vocabulary or Grammar Worksheet, Speaking Activity handout). Follow the stages in order — Warm-Up, Presentation, Guided Practice, Independent Practice, Production, Wrap-Up — adjusting timing to fit your class. The lesson is designed for one 40–45 minute period but also splits cleanly into two shorter lessons if your students need more time with the vocabulary before moving to the question patterns.

Assessment

Use the Free Time and Hobbies Quiz as a short formal check of learning, either at the end of this lesson or at the start of the next one. Use the Grading Rubric if you want to score the Speaking Activity itself.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Keep a word bank with pictures visible on the board throughout the lesson. Let students point to flashcards instead of speaking at first, and accept a short answer before requiring a frequency adverb in the same sentence.
ON-LEVEL: Students use the full question-and-answer pattern for both preferences and frequency independently during guided and independent practice.
CHALLENGE: Ask students to add a reason to their sentence or to compare two hobbies during the Speaking Activity.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Close the lesson with a quick "Class Survey" — ask the whole class "Who likes swimming?" and have students who agree stand up, then move to the next hobby. It's a fast, low-pressure way to review all 12 words and get students moving before the bell.

Teacher Tips

Write a few example phrases on the board during the Presentation stage (like reading, enjoy cooking, love dancing) so students can see that the -ing form doesn't change after like, enjoy, or love — hearing the pattern is not always enough for this grade level; seeing it written helps it stick.
