Grade 5 Math Lesson Plan: Coordinates on a Grid

About This Resource

A 4-page, minute-by-minute plan for 3 lessons (3 lessons × 50 minutes) on coordinates on a grid: objectives, vocabulary, differentiation, misconceptions and teacher tips.

Overview

Students learn why we need an agreed way to describe a position: two numbers, in a fixed order. They read and plot points in the first quadrant using (x, y) — across the x-axis first, then up the y-axis — and understand the origin (0, 0) and points on the axes. They use coordinates to draw and complete shapes, find distances along grid lines and solve real-life map problems. Battleship-style games and "Who is right?" tasks show why the ORDER of the numbers matters.

Grade 5 Lesson Plan Coordinates on a Grid

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the x-axis, the y-axis and the origin (0, 0).
  • Read and write the coordinates of a point as (x, y): across first, then up.
  • Plot points, including points on the axes, in the first quadrant.
  • Use coordinates to draw and complete shapes (e.g. find the fourth corner of a rectangle).
  • Solve problems with coordinates: distances along grid lines, routes and maps.

Lesson Procedure

  • Read the overview and success criteria before teaching.
  • Lesson 1 — Why we need coordinates (50 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
  • Lesson 2 — Plotting points and shapes (50 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
  • Lesson 3 — Using coordinates to solve problems (50 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
  • Use the matching PowerPoint, worksheet and assessment from this pack — the plan refers to their slide and part numbers.

Assessment

Exit tickets in each lesson. Worksheet Parts A–E with the answer key. Quick Quiz (6 marks) after lesson 2. Unit Test (22 marks) at the end. Homework after each lesson. Performance task (rubric): "Design a Treasure Map" — plot 6 places and write coordinate clues.

Differentiation

Support: Use grids from 0 to 5 first. Challenge: Find all the points with whole-number coordinates that are exactly 3 units (along grid lines) from (5, 5). English language learners: Teach "across", "up", "comma", "brackets" with gestures.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Human Coordinates (10 minutes, Whole class): Call a coordinate, e.g. (3, 2). A student walks from the origin: 3 steps across, then 2 steps up.
  • Hidden Ships (15 minutes, Pairs): Each player secretly draws 3 ships: lengths 2, 3 and 4 points along grid lines. Take turns calling a coordinate, e.g. "(4, 6)".
  • Coordinate Pictures (15 minutes, Individual): Students draw a simple picture with straight lines on the grid. They list the coordinates of every corner in order.

Teacher Tips

A masking-tape floor grid makes the lesson memorable — students walk "across, then up". Always ask "Which number is first? Why?"
