Learning Objectives

  • Describe the x-axis, the y-axis and the origin (0, 0).
  • Read and write the coordinates of a point as (x, y): across first, then up.
  • Plot points, including points on the axes, in the first quadrant.
  • Use coordinates to draw and complete shapes (e.g. find the fourth corner of a rectangle).
  • Solve problems with coordinates: distances along grid lines, routes and maps.

How to Use This Resource

  • A short check after lesson 2 (reading and plotting).
  • Allow 10–15 minutes.
  • Mark with the answer key and re-teach any part most students found hard.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Human Coordinates (10 minutes, Whole class): Call a coordinate, e.g. (3, 2). A student walks from the origin: 3 steps across, then 2 steps up.
  • Hidden Ships (15 minutes, Pairs): Each player secretly draws 3 ships: lengths 2, 3 and 4 points along grid lines. Take turns calling a coordinate, e.g. "(4, 6)".
  • Coordinate Pictures (15 minutes, Individual): Students draw a simple picture with straight lines on the grid. They list the coordinates of every corner in order.

Differentiation

Support: Use grids from 0 to 5 first. Challenge: Find all the points with whole-number coordinates that are exactly 3 units (along grid lines) from (5, 5). English language learners: Teach "across", "up", "comma", "brackets" with gestures.

Assessment

6-mark quiz with an answer key and a score guide.

Teacher Tips

A masking-tape floor grid makes the lesson memorable — students walk "across, then up". Always ask "Which number is first? Why?"
