Lesson Procedure

Read through both periods before teaching to decide how to pace them against your own timetable — some classes may need the two periods split across three shorter lessons. Prepare the vocabulary and language-focus materials referenced in the Materials list (the matching Vocabulary Worksheet and Language Worksheet from this topic work well alongside this plan). Follow the procedure tables in order, adjusting wording for your class's proficiency level. Use the Differentiation and Assessment sections at the end of each period to decide how you will support weaker students and check understanding before moving on.

Assessment

Use the teacher observation notes built into each period (listening for target vocabulary and opinion language during pair and group work), plus the informal checks suggested in each Wrap-Up stage. For a more formal check, pair this lesson with the topic's Review Quiz once both periods are complete.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Provide the vocabulary list with first-language translations or picture cards for students who need it, and allow students to read their opinion sentence from a written sentence frame rather than speaking from memory.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete each stage of the lesson as written, using the sentence frames provided.
CHALLENGE: Ask stronger students to give a reason and a follow-up example when stating an opinion, or to summarise a partner's opinion back to them before responding.

Classroom Activity Ideas

As a five-minute warm-up before Period 1, put a single image on the board (a beach with litter, a smoky street, or similar) and ask students to call out any English words they already know related to it. This surfaces existing vocabulary and creates a natural bridge into the new word list.

Teacher Tips

Before the speaking debate in Period 2, do a very quick choral drill of the four language-focus categories (opinion, agree, disagree, persuade) so students have the phrases fresh in their mouths — it noticeably improves how much target language they actually use once they're in their groups.
