Healthy Habits Vocabulary and Giving Advice PowerPoint

About This Resource

An 11-slide presentation for Grade 8 ESL that introduces health and healthy-habits vocabulary, then teaches should/shouldn't for giving advice through modelled examples, guided practice, and activity instructions. Designed to carry a full two-period lesson from warm-up to exit ticket.

Overview

The presentation opens with a title slide and learning objectives, then works through a warm-up discussion question, two vocabulary slides (eight key words with student-friendly definitions), a grammar-focus slide explaining should/shouldn't, a "problem and advice" comparison slide, a guided-practice slide for a whole-class gap-fill, instructions for the speaking role-play, a writing-task overview, and a closing exit-ticket slide. Every slide includes a visual element (icon circles, comparison cards, or callout boxes) rather than plain bullet points.

Lesson Sequence

  • Project the presentation from the start of Period 1. Pause on the vocabulary slides to check pronunciation and understanding before moving to the grammar-focus slide. Use the guided-practice slide as a whole-class activity before students move to independent worksheet practice. The speaking and writing slides can be shown again at the start of Period 2 as a quick reminder before students begin those activities.

Classroom Activities

  • After the grammar-focus slide, do a quick "thumbs up/thumbs down" check: read out a mix of correct and incorrect should/shouldn't sentences and have students show thumbs up for correct, thumbs down for incorrect, before continuing to guided practice.

Teacher Tips

On the vocabulary slides, cover the definition with your hand or a sticky note and ask students to guess the meaning from the word alone before revealing it — it keeps the class more active than simply reading the slide aloud.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify and use key health vocabulary introduced in the presentation.
  • Students will be able to explain the should/shouldn't structure for giving advice.
  • Students will be able to complete a guided should/shouldn't sentence as a class.
  • Students will be able to describe what is expected of them in the speaking and writing activities.

Differentiation

Support: Leave vocabulary slides visible longer, and allow students to copy key sentences from the grammar-focus slide into their notebooks as a reference.
On-Level: Follow the presentation at its normal pace as outlined in the lesson plan.
Challenge: After the "Advice in Action" slide, ask faster students to suggest an additional problem-and-advice pair of their own before the class moves on.

Assessment

The presentation itself is a teaching tool rather than an assessment, but the guided-practice slide gives an immediate, informal check of understanding before students move to independent work.
