I Enjoy Reading, I Want to Travel: Gerunds and Infinitives

About This Resource

A complete Grade 9 ESL lesson pack on gerunds and infinitives: gerunds as subjects and after prepositions, verbs followed by a gerund (enjoy, avoid, finish, mind), verbs followed by an infinitive (want, decide, hope, plan), verbs that take both with the same meaning (like, start, continue), verbs that change meaning (stop, remember, forget, try), and infinitives of purpose. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn when to use the -ing form (gerund) and when to use to + base verb (infinitive). They start with gerunds as subjects (Swimming is good exercise) and after prepositions (interested in learning), then learn the most common verbs that take a gerund, an infinitive or both. They study the four key verbs that change meaning (stop, remember, forget, try) through short stories, and practise the infinitive of purpose (I went to the shop to buy milk). A blog post about a student's gap year gives the patterns in context, and students finish with a personal profile using at least ten patterns.

Grade 9 (ages 14–15), upper-intermediate ESL 60 minutes Grammar vocabulary reading comprehension speaking writing

Learning Objectives

  • Use gerunds as subjects, as objects of common verbs and after prepositions.
  • Use infinitives after common verbs and to express purpose.
  • Explain the change in meaning when stop, remember, forget and try are followed by a gerund or an infinitive.

How to Use This Resource

  • Open with slide 1: say "I enjoy cooking, but I want to learn baking" and ask students what they enjoy doing and what they want to do this year.
  • Teach gerunds, infinitives, verbs that take both and verbs that change meaning with the slides, checking each step with the matching worksheet activity.
  • Students complete the worksheet and the speaking survey, then use the quiz to check learning and the homework profile for writing. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Verb pattern sort: students sort 24 verb cards into gerund, infinitive and both columns, then check with the reference chart.
  • Find someone who: "Find someone who has decided to learn an instrument / avoids eating vegetables / can't stand waiting."
  • Memory stories: pairs tell short stories using "I'll never forget..." and "I must remember to..." to practise the meaning change.

Differentiation

Support: give a printed chart of the 30 verbs in the lesson with examples, and focus on gerund and infinitive verbs before verbs that change meaning. Challenge: use verb + object + infinitive (She asked me to help), perfect gerunds (I remember having seen it) and passive infinitives (I want to be chosen).

Assessment

Worksheet activities and the quiz check verb patterns, prepositions and meaning changes (answer key included). The survey and the homework profile are marked with the four-level rubric.

Teacher Tips

Teach patterns as chunks rather than single words: "enjoy doing", "decide to do", "interested in doing". Students remember the chunk and the pattern together. Keep a three-column chart on the wall (gerund | infinitive | both) and add verbs as they appear.
