If Only I Had Known: Wish and If Only

About This Resource

A complete Grade 10 ESL grammar lesson pack on wish and if only: wish + past simple and were for present situations we would like to be different, wish + could for abilities, wish + past perfect for regrets about the past, wish + would for annoying habits and changes we want from others, and the stronger meaning of if only, with practice in reading, rewriting and personal writing. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn how English speakers talk about wishes and regrets, and why the verb seems to move one step back in time. They study four patterns: wish + past simple or were for unreal present situations (I wish I had a bike), wish + could for abilities (I wish I could sing), wish + past perfect for past regrets (I wish I had studied harder) and wish + would for annoying behavior or changes we want from other people (I wish you would stop interrupting). They learn that if only expresses the same ideas more strongly, read a story about a disappointing school trip, transform sentences and write about their own wishes and regrets.

Grade 10 (ages 15–16) 55 minutes Grammar expressing feelings reading sentence transformation personal writing

Learning Objectives

  • Use wish and if only with the past simple, were and could to talk about the present.
  • Use wish and if only with the past perfect to express regrets about the past.
  • Use wish + would to talk about annoying habits and changes we want others to make.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: "It's raining, and you're stuck inside. What do you wish?" Write students' ideas on the board and correct the verb forms together.
  • Teach the four patterns and if only with the slides and timelines, then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 6, then use the quiz to check and the homework wish list. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Magic lamp: each student writes three wishes for the present, one regret about the past and one thing they wish someone would do, then shares with a partner.
  • Regret role-play: one student explains a problem (missed the bus, forgot a friend's birthday) and the partner reacts with if only sentences.
  • Song search: students listen to a song with wish or if only and write down the patterns they hear.

Differentiation

Support: give a pattern table with one example per row and a list of irregular past participles. Challenge: write a short diary entry from the point of view of a story character who regrets a decision, using all four patterns.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check the patterns, their meanings and common errors (answer key included). Activity 6 and the homework wish list are assessed with the rubric.

Teacher Tips

Draw a timeline for every pattern. Students understand the "one step back" idea quickly when they see that a wish about now uses a past form and a wish about the past uses the past perfect.
