Kindergarten ESL Pair Speaking Activity: Ask Your Friend! (All About Me)

About This Resource

A picture-supported pair-interview activity for Kindergarten ESL students, where partners take turns asking and answering three simple personal questions — how they feel, whether they have a sister or brother, and their favorite color — and circle their friend's answers. Includes a full teacher instruction page alongside the student interview sheet.

Overview

This is a genuine information-gap speaking task: each student needs their partner to answer before they can complete their own sheet, which gives real purpose to the questions rather than just practising them in the abstract. Page 1 is a teacher instruction page covering pairing, modelling, and the sentence frames to use; page 2 is the student-facing interview sheet with picture support for every question so children who can't yet read the questions independently can still participate fully once the teacher has modelled them aloud.

Kindergarten 40-50 Minutes Speaking All About Me

Student Task

  • Follow the How to Use section on page 1: pair students, model the full interview yourself with one student first, then have partners take turns asking all three questions and circling the answers on their own sheet before swapping roles. See page 1 for the exact sentence frames to model and two extension ideas.

Classroom Use

  • See "Extension Ideas" on page 1: swapping to a new partner and repeating the interview, or having a few students report one fact about their friend back to the whole class.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Allow a one-word answer instead of the full sentence frame, and let the interviewing partner point to pictures instead of speaking the full question if needed.
ON-LEVEL: Complete all three questions using the modelled sentence frames.
CHALLENGE: Add a follow-up question of their own choosing, or report their friend's answers back to the class in full sentences.

Answer Key & Assessment

Use this activity as a Speaking observation for the All About Me Grading Rubric — see the Assessment note on page 1 for what to listen for.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to ask a partner a simple personal question using a modelled sentence frame.
  • Students will be able to answer a personal question about feelings, family, and preferences.
  • Students will be able to record a partner's spoken answer by circling the matching picture.

Teacher Tips

Model the entire interview once, all the way through, before releasing pairs to work — Kindergarten students often manage the first question well but lose the thread by question three without a full model to refer back to.
