Kindergarten ESL Worksheet: My Family (Draw, Label and Match)

About This Resource

A two-page worksheet where Kindergarten ESL students draw and label their own family using a picture word bank, then practise matching family words to pictures on a second page. It's built to work for any family structure, since the drawing task doesn't require a fixed number or set of family members.

Overview

Page 1 gives students an open drawing box and a seven-word picture word bank (Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother, Baby, Grandma, Grandpa) they can copy from to label the people they draw — there's no requirement to include every word bank item, since not every family looks the same. Page 2 shifts to a fixed-answer matching activity: five numbered family pictures are matched to five lettered words by writing the correct letter next to each picture, giving the worksheet a genuine gradable component alongside the open-ended drawing task.

Student Task

Introduce the word bank pictures first (these match the All About Me flashcards), then let students draw their own family in the box on page 1, copying a word from the bank next to each person they can label. Move to page 2 once most students have finished drawing, and read the instruction aloud: match each numbered picture to its lettered word by writing the letter in the blank. This worksheet pairs with Session 1 of the All About Me Lesson Plan.

Classroom Use

Family Show and Tell: after page 1, invite a few students to hold up their drawing and name one person using "This is my ___," reinforcing the sentence frame from the Lesson Plan.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Provide a printed copy of the word bank cut into individual word strips so the student can glue or place the correct word next to their drawing instead of copying it by hand; complete the page 2 matching activity together as guided practice first.
ON-LEVEL: Complete both pages independently with the word bank as reference.
CHALLENGE: Label additional details in the drawing (for example, a pet or a house), or write a simple sentence such as "I have a sister" beneath the drawing.

Answer Key & Assessment

Use the page 2 matching activity as a quick, gradable vocabulary check, and use the page 1 drawing and labelling as an observation point for the Vocabulary Recognition and Task Completion criteria on the All About Me Grading Rubric.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to draw a representation of their own family.
Students will be able to copy a family word from a word bank to label a picture, with support.
Students will be able to match a picture of a family member to its correct written word.

Teacher Tips

Keep the word bank open-ended in conversation — if a student's family doesn't match any word bank picture exactly (for example, they live with an aunt or a family friend), let them draw that person and either skip the label or write a word of their own choosing.
