Long Division: Dividing by Two-Digit Numbers

About This Resource

A complete Grade 5 pack on dividing 3- and 4-digit numbers by 2-digit divisors: estimating, the long division steps, remainders, checking with multiplication and solving word problems. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, editable slides and Word files, and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn to divide by two-digit numbers step by step. They estimate first by rounding the divisor, follow the long division steps (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down), write remainders, and check every answer by multiplying. Word problems show when to round a quotient up and how to explain what a remainder means. Every division in the pack is calculated by the generator and checked automatically.

Grade 5 (ages 10–11) 50 minutes Estimation long division multiplication facts checking answers problem solving

Student Task

  • Teach the steps with the slides and the worked example in the lesson plan.
  • Use the worksheet for guided and independent practice; ask students to estimate before every problem.
  • Give the quiz at the end of the lesson or the next day; use the rubric for the written explanations.
  • Send the homework page home and use the A5 flashcards for vocabulary review.

Classroom Use

  • Estimate first race: show a division; the first pair to give a sensible estimate explains how they rounded.
  • Remainder stories: give the same division (150 ÷ 32) in three stories where the answer is 4, 5 or 22.
  • Check partner: one student divides, the other checks by multiplying, then they swap.

Differentiation

Support: give students a multiples list for each divisor and start with 3-digit dividends without remainders. Challenge: include 4-digit dividends with remainders and ask students to write their own word problem.

Answer Key & Assessment

The quiz (19 points) checks dividing with and without remainders, estimating and word problems. The rubric gives four levels for estimating, long division, remainders and checking.

Learning Objectives

  • Estimate quotients by rounding the divisor and dividend to friendly numbers.
  • Divide 3- and 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers using long division, with and without remainders.
  • Check division with multiplication and explain what a remainder means in a word problem.

Teacher Tips

Before dividing by 24, ask students to write the first few multiples (24, 48, 72, 96, 120). A short multiples list makes each step faster and reduces mistakes.
