Grade 1 (ages 6–7) 35 minutes Comparing length measurement words counting comparing numbers

Student Task

  • Use the lesson plan to teach the lesson in about 35 minutes.
  • Print the worksheet for guided and independent practice.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and the homework for practice at home.
  • Use the rubric to record each child's level.

Classroom Use

  • Line up: children line up two pencils at the same start and say which is longer.
  • Cube snakes: children build a cube snake and compare it with a partner's snake.
  • Classroom hunt: children find one thing longer than their hand and one thing shorter.

Differentiation

Support: compare only two real objects before using the pictures. Challenge: ask children to order four objects from shortest to longest and say a sentence about them.

Answer Key & Assessment

Watch whether children line up the ends before they compare. Children who say a thing is longer because it is taller or wider need more practice with one direction of length.

Learning Objectives

  • Compare two objects and say which one is longer or shorter.
  • Order three objects from the shortest to the longest and use the words longest and shortest.
  • Measure length with cubes and compare the numbers.

Teacher Tips

Show that objects must start at the same line to be compared fairly. Use real objects first. Say the words longer, shorter, longest and shortest again and again, and have children say them too.
