Multiplying Fractions: Parts of Parts

About This Resource

A complete Grade 5 math pack on multiplying fractions: a fraction of a whole number, a fraction times a fraction, area models, simplifying answers and real-life problems with recipes, gardens and classes. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that multiplying by a fraction means finding a part of something. They find fractions of whole numbers (3/4 of 12), use area models to see that 1/2 × 3/4 = 3/8, learn the rule of multiplying the numerators and the denominators, simplify their answers, and notice that multiplying by a fraction less than 1 makes a number smaller. They finish by solving recipe and garden problems.

Grade 5 (ages 10–11) 50 minutes Fractions multiplication simplifying area models problem solving

Learning Objectives

  • Find a fraction of a whole number.
  • Multiply a fraction by a fraction using area models and the rule, and simplify the answer.
  • Solve real-life problems that involve multiplying fractions.

How to Use This Resource

  • Fold a piece of paper in half, then shade 3/4 of one half, to show 1/2 × 3/4.
  • Teach the area model and the rule with the slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the recipe homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Paper folding: fold paper to model 1/2 × 1/3 and 2/3 × 1/2 and compare the shaded parts.
  • Recipe scaling: halve a simple recipe and work out the new amounts.
  • Fraction of a group: find 2/5 of the class, 3/4 of the crayons in a box and 1/3 of the books on a shelf.

Differentiation

Support: start with unit fractions of whole numbers and use counters and area models. Challenge: multiply mixed numbers by converting them to improper fractions first.

Assessment

Activity 1 and the quiz check the multiplication rule; activities 2 to 6 check fractions of whole numbers, models and problems. Use the rubric for activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Say "of" when you see ×: 1/2 × 3/4 means half of three quarters. It helps students predict that the answer will be smaller.
