On the Other Hand: Linking Words of Contrast

About This Resource

A complete Grade 8 ESL writing lesson pack on linking words of contrast: but, however, although, even though, whereas, despite, in spite of, nevertheless and on the other hand, the grammar that follows each one (a clause, a noun or an -ing form), correct punctuation, and using contrast words to write balanced comparison paragraphs. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn how writers show contrast and balance ideas. They study three groups of linking words: those followed by a clause (although, even though, whereas), those followed by a noun or an -ing form (despite, in spite of) and those that start a new sentence and are followed by a comma (however, nevertheless, on the other hand). They practice choosing the right word, joining sentences, correcting common errors such as "despite it was raining", and reading a short article comparing life in the city and the countryside. They finish by writing their own balanced paragraph comparing two choices.

Grade 8 (ages 13–14) 55 minutes Grammar punctuation sentence combining reading balanced writing

Learning Objectives

  • Use linking words of contrast to connect opposing ideas.
  • Follow each linking word with the correct grammar and punctuation.
  • Write a balanced comparison paragraph using a variety of contrast words.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: "Online shopping is convenient. You can't try clothes on." Ask students to join the ideas in as many ways as they can.
  • Teach the three groups of linking words with the slides, then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 6, then use the quiz to check and the homework paragraph. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Opinion line: give a topic, such as homework on weekends. Students say one advantage and a partner replies with a disadvantage using a contrast word.
  • Linker dominoes: cards with half-sentences and linking words that students connect into correct sentences.
  • Debate warm-up: groups prepare two arguments for and two against a topic, linking them with however and on the other hand.

Differentiation

Support: give a chart showing each linking word with its grammar pattern and an example sentence. Challenge: rewrite one sentence five ways using different contrast words, keeping the meaning the same.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check choosing linking words, grammar and punctuation (answer key included). Activity 6 and the homework paragraph are assessed with the rubric.

Teacher Tips

The most common error is using despite or in spite of with a full clause. Teach the fix "despite the fact that" as a safe option, but encourage students to use a noun or an -ing form instead.
