Planning My Future: Grade 10 Future Plans and Ambitions PowerPoint

About This Resource

An 11-slide teaching presentation for Grade 10 ESL classes that introduces career and further-study vocabulary and the going to / will distinction, then walks students through guided practice, a speaking interview, and a writing task.

Overview

This slide deck is designed to be taught directly, following the sequence of the topic's Lesson Plan. It opens with learning objectives and a warm-up discussion prompt, then presents eight career and future vocabulary words across two visually organized slides (Study and Training; Work and Ambition). A Language Focus slide sets out the going to / will distinction with clear example sentences, followed by a "Plan or Prediction?" slide that compares four real situations side by side. The deck then moves into guided class practice, instructions for the speaking interview activity, a bridge into the writing task, and a two-part exit ticket to close the lesson.

Lesson Sequence

  • Project the deck and teach through it slide by slide, pausing on each vocabulary slide to model pronunciation and check understanding before moving on. Use the Warm-Up slide to activate prior knowledge before introducing new vocabulary. When you reach the Guided Practice slide, complete the fill-in-the-blank sentence together as a class before releasing students to the Speaking Activity in pairs. The final two slides connect directly into the topic's Writing Activity and can be used to introduce that task or as a same-lesson wrap-up.

Classroom Activities

  • After the vocabulary slides, do a quick "true for me" check: read out a vocabulary word and ask students to raise their hand if it describes something they are personally interested in (for example, "raise your hand if vocational training interests you"). It's a quick way to personalize the vocabulary before moving into the speaking and writing tasks.

Teacher Tips

On the "Plan or Prediction?" slide, cover the example sentence first and ask students to guess whether the situation calls for going to or will before revealing the answer — it gets far more active thinking out of the class than reading the example straight away.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify and use eight career and future vocabulary words.
  • Students will be able to distinguish between going to and will in different situations.
  • Students will be able to decide whether a statement is a plan or a prediction.
  • Students will be able to complete a guided future-tense sentence as a class.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Keep the vocabulary and Language Focus slides visible throughout the Guided Practice and Speaking Activity stages so students can refer back to definitions and example sentences as needed.
ON-LEVEL: Follow the deck's sequence as designed, moving from vocabulary to language focus to guided and independent practice.
CHALLENGE: During the Plan or Prediction slide, ask stronger students to create their own fifth example for one of the two categories.

Assessment

Use the Exit Ticket slide as a quick end-of-lesson check — collect students' new vocabulary word and future-tense sentence on paper to see who has grasped the target language and who needs more support before the next lesson.
