Rules and Advice: Must, Have To and Should

About This Resource

A complete Grade 7 ESL grammar pack on modal verbs for obligation and advice: must, have to, mustn't, don't have to, should and shouldn't, with school rules, signs, advice problems and writing a class charter. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn how to talk about rules and give advice. They use must and have to for obligations, mustn't for things that are not allowed, don't have to for things that are not necessary, and should and shouldn't for advice. The key contrast between mustn't (it's against the rules) and don't have to (it's your choice) is practised with signs, school rules and real-life situations, and students finish by writing a class charter and advice for a new student.

Grade 7 ESL (ages 12–13), A2–B1 50 minutes Grammar reading signs speaking giving advice writing rules

Learning Objectives

  • Use must and have to for obligation, and mustn't for prohibition.
  • Explain the difference between mustn't and don't have to.
  • Give advice with should and shouldn't.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show a few common signs (no swimming, wear a helmet) and ask students what each one means.
  • Teach the forms and meanings with the slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the home rules homework.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Sign designers: groups design signs for the school and write a must or mustn't sentence for each.
  • Agony aunt: students write a problem on a card; another group answers with should and shouldn't.
  • Rules debate: students suggest a new school rule and the class discusses whether students must, should or don't have to follow it.

Differentiation

Support: focus on must, mustn't and should first, with picture signs. Challenge: add had to for the past and compare rules in different countries.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check form and meaning. Use the rubric for the class charter in activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Mustn't and don't have to look similar but mean very different things. Use the example "You mustn't eat in the library" (forbidden) and "You don't have to wear a hat" (optional) and come back to it often.
