Slowly, Quietly, Carefully: Adverbs of Manner

About This Resource

A complete Grade 5 ESL lesson pack on adverbs of manner: describing how actions happen, forming adverbs from adjectives with -ly, spelling rules (happy → happily, gentle → gently), irregular adverbs (well, fast, hard), adjective or adverb, word order, and a charades game and descriptive writing task. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that adverbs of manner tell us how something happens. They form adverbs by adding -ly to adjectives (quick → quickly), learn the spelling changes (easy → easily, gentle → gently, terrible → terribly), and remember irregular adverbs such as well, fast and hard. They choose between adjectives and adverbs (She is a careful driver. She drives carefully.), place adverbs after the verb or object, read a short sports story and write vivid sentences describing how people act.

Learning Objectives

  • Form adverbs of manner from adjectives using -ly and the spelling rules.
  • Use irregular adverbs such as well, fast and hard correctly.
  • Choose correctly between an adjective and an adverb in a sentence.

How to Use This Resource

  • Walk across the room slowly, then quickly, and ask students how you walked. Teach with the slides.
  • Play adverb charades with the flashcards, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Adverb charades: a student mimes an action in a certain way (brushing teeth angrily); the class guesses the verb and adverb.
  • In the manner of the word: one student leaves the room, the class chooses an adverb, and the student asks classmates to do actions in that manner to guess it.
  • Sentence upgrade: students add an adverb to plain sentences to make them more vivid.

Differentiation

Support: focus on regular -ly adverbs with picture cards and actions. Challenge: use adverbs at the start of a sentence for effect (Suddenly, the lights went out.) and compare good and well.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check forming and choosing adverbs (answer keys included). Use the rubric for the descriptive writing.

Teacher Tips

Ask "How?" after every verb. If the answer describes the action, use an adverb. If it describes a noun, use an adjective. The question How? is the quickest check.
