Solve for x: One-Step Equations

About This Resource

A complete Grade 6 math pack on one-step equations: what an equation is, keeping both sides balanced, using inverse operations to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division equations, checking by substitution, and writing equations from word problems. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that an equation is like a balanced scale: whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other. They use inverse operations to get the variable on its own (subtract to undo adding, multiply to undo dividing), check every answer by substituting it back into the equation, and turn short word problems into equations they can solve.

Grade 6 (ages 11–12) 50 minutes Algebra inverse operations reasoning checking problem solving

Learning Objectives

  • Explain that an equation shows two equal amounts, like a balanced scale.
  • Solve one-step equations using inverse operations.
  • Check solutions by substitution and write equations for word problems.

How to Use This Resource

  • Draw a balance scale with x + 3 on one side and 8 on the other. Ask: "What is x? How do you know?"
  • Teach inverse operations and checking with the slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework page home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Balance puzzles: use a real or drawn balance with cups (x) and counters to solve equations.
  • Mystery number: "I think of a number, multiply it by 4 and get 32. What is my number?" Students write and solve the equation.
  • Equation relay: teams pass a whiteboard, each member solving one step and checking the last answer.

Differentiation

Support: start with addition and subtraction equations and use the balance picture. Challenge: solve two-step equations such as 2x + 3 = 11.

Assessment

Activity 1 and the quiz check solving; activities 2 to 6 check inverse operations, checking and word problems. Use the rubric for activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Insist on checking. Substituting the answer back in shows students immediately whether they used the right inverse operation.
