The Person Who, the Place Where: Relative Clauses

About This Resource

A complete Grade 8 ESL grammar pack on defining relative clauses with who, which, that, where and whose: choosing the right pronoun, joining two sentences, writing definitions and describing people, places and things. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn to add information to a noun with a relative clause. They use who for people, which for things and animals, that for people or things, where for places and whose for possession. They choose the correct pronoun, join pairs of sentences into one (The girl is my cousin. She won the race. → The girl who won the race is my cousin.), write dictionary-style definitions, play a guessing game and describe their own favorite people, places and things.

Grade 8 ESL (ages 13–14), B1 50 minutes Grammar sentence combining defining speaking writing

Learning Objectives

  • Use who, which, that, where and whose correctly in defining relative clauses.
  • Join two simple sentences into one sentence with a relative clause.
  • Write clear definitions and descriptions using relative clauses.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with a guessing game: "It's a person who works in a hospital and helps sick people." (a doctor)
  • Teach the pronouns with the slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the definitions homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Taboo definitions: students describe a word without saying it, using "It's a thing which…" or "It's a person who…".
  • Sentence surgery: give pairs two short sentences on strips and ask them to join them with the right pronoun.
  • Class quiz: groups write five definitions for classmates to guess.

Differentiation

Support: focus on who, which and where with picture prompts. Challenge: introduce non-defining clauses with commas (My brother, who lives in Canada, is a doctor).

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check pronoun choice and sentence combining. Use the rubric for the descriptions in activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Watch for doubled pronouns such as "the boy who he lives next door". Remind students that the relative pronoun replaces he, she, it or they.
