What's Left Over? Division with Remainders

About This Resource

A complete Grade 4 math pack on division with remainders: sharing with leftovers, writing answers as R, checking with multiplication, and deciding what to do with the remainder in word problems (round up, ignore it or share it). Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students discover that some numbers cannot be shared equally: 14 cookies shared among 4 friends gives 3 each with 2 left over. They write answers as 14 ÷ 4 = 3 R 2, check them with multiplication (4 × 3 + 2 = 14), and solve real problems where the remainder matters, such as how many cars are needed for a class trip (round up) or how many full boxes can be packed (ignore the remainder).

Grade 4 (ages 9–10) 50 minutes Division multiplication facts checking problem solving reasoning

Learning Objectives

  • Divide two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers and write the remainder.
  • Check a division with a remainder using multiplication and addition.
  • Decide what to do with the remainder in a word problem.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with counters: share 14 counters among 4 students and ask what to do with the extras.
  • Teach the method with the slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework page home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Leftover game: roll a number cube to choose a divisor, share a handful of counters and keep the remainder as points.
  • Field trip planner: plan cars, tables and teams for a class trip and explain what you did with each remainder.
  • Remainder sort: sort word problems into round up, ignore the remainder and share the remainder.

Differentiation

Support: use counters and multiplication charts; start with divisors 2, 3, 4 and 5. Challenge: write remainders as fractions (14 ÷ 4 = 3 2/4 = 3 1/2) and divide three-digit numbers.

Assessment

Activity 1 and the quiz check dividing with remainders; activities 2 to 6 check checking and interpreting remainders. Use the rubric for activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Remind students that the remainder must always be smaller than the number they divide by. If it is not, they can share out at least one more.
