All the Way Around: Finding Perimeter

About This Resource

A complete Grade 3 math pack on perimeter: measuring around shapes, finding the perimeter of rectangles, squares and triangles, missing side lengths and real-life perimeter problems such as fences and picture frames. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children learn that perimeter is the distance all the way around a shape. They walk around the edge of a rug, trace the edges of shapes, and add the side lengths of rectangles, squares and triangles. They learn the shortcut for rectangles (add the length and width, then double), find a missing side when the perimeter is known, and solve real problems about fences, ribbons and frames. Every rectangle question is generated and checked automatically.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain that perimeter is the total distance around a shape.
  • Find the perimeter of rectangles, squares and triangles by adding the side lengths.
  • Find a missing side length when the perimeter is known, and solve perimeter word problems.

How to Use This Resource

  • Walk around the edge of the classroom rug together and say: "We walked the perimeter."
  • Teach the method with the slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the perimeter hunt homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Perimeter walk: children walk around the edges of shapes taped on the floor and count their steps.
  • String shapes: children use string to measure around a book, then measure the string with a ruler.
  • Same perimeter challenge: on grid paper, draw three different rectangles that each have a perimeter of 20 units.

Differentiation

Support: label every side on the shape before adding, and use grid paper. Challenge: find the perimeter of L-shaped figures and draw rectangles with a given perimeter.

Assessment

Activity 1 and the quiz check perimeter of rectangles; activities 2 to 6 check other shapes, missing sides and problems. Use the rubric for activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Children often mix up perimeter and area. Use the phrase "perimeter = the path around" and trace the edge with your finger every time.
