Learning Objectives

  • Explain the difference between mass (how heavy) and capacity (how much a container holds).
  • Choose the best unit (g, kg, mL or L) to measure everyday objects.
  • Read dial scales and measuring jugs where marks go up in 50s, 100s or 250s.
  • Know that 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 L = 1000 mL, and change between units.
  • Solve word problems that add, subtract, multiply or divide masses and capacities.

How to Use This Resource

  • Share the rubric with students before the task so they know what success looks like.
  • Circle one level per skill for each student; add the points (maximum 16).
  • Record scores on the record sheet.

Differentiation

Support: Use only scales and jugs with marks every 100. Challenge: Read scales with marks every 20 g or 25 mL. English language learners: Teach the question forms: "How heavy is it?" "How much does it hold?

Teacher Tips

Use rice or sand instead of water if your classroom has no sink — it pours and measures the same way. Collect empty food packets and bottles: they show real masses and capacities to read
