Base-10 Block Regrouping Hands-On Activity
About This Resource
A hands-on activity where Grade 2 students cut out and use their own base-10 blocks to physically trade a ten for ten ones, building five subtraction problems before checking their understanding with two problems solved on paper alone.
Overview
Students cut out a personal set of tens rods and ones cubes from the included sheet, then use them to build and solve five subtraction problems that all require regrouping, recording their thinking in a table on page 1. A "Talk About It" discussion prompt asks students to reflect on how they knew regrouping was needed, and a short "Check Yourself" section asks them to solve two further problems using only pencil and paper, without the blocks, as a bridge toward the written method. Because this is a physical, hands-on activity rather than a worksheet with one fixed answer, the accompanying teacher notes explain expected results and common issues to watch for, rather than a traditional answer key.

Grade 2 Subtraction With Regrouping — Complete Topic Bundle — ฿99 one-timeHow to Play
- Photocopy the cut-out page onto card stock if available, and allow 5 to 8 minutes for students to cut out their blocks before starting. This activity works best in the same lesson as the Vocabulary and Concepts PowerPoint, right after regrouping is first introduced, so that students are building blocks for problems they have just seen modelled. Circulate while students build each problem, checking that they remove a traded tens rod from their tens pile rather than just adding ones without adjusting the tens count.
Variations
- Build It Backwards: give students a difference (such as 27) and ask them to use their blocks to show two different starting numbers and amounts subtracted that could have produced it, encouraging flexible thinking about the same numbers.
Teacher Tips
Have students keep their tens and ones blocks in two clearly separate piles at all times, even between problems — mixed piles are the single biggest source of counting errors during this activity.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to build a two-digit number using base-10 blocks.
- Students will be able to physically trade 1 tens rod for 10 ones cubes when a subtraction problem requires it.
- Students will be able to record the blocks used before and after regrouping in a table.
- Students will be able to solve a two-digit subtraction problem with regrouping using pencil and paper alone.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Pre-cut a set of blocks in an envelope for students who need extra time, and allow continued use of blocks for the "Check Yourself" section if a student is not yet ready to go without them.
ON-LEVEL: Complete all five main problems with blocks and both "Check Yourself" problems without blocks, as instructed.
CHALLENGE: After completing the activity, challenge students to solve a three-digit subtraction problem using only their tens rods and ones cubes (treating the hundreds digit as a separate group of ten rods), noticing what is similar and different from two-digit regrouping.
Assessment
Teacher observation of the physical regrouping process during the activity, completed recording table, and accuracy of the two "Check Yourself" problems solved without blocks.
