Make a Ten and Carry: Adding Two-Digit Numbers with Regrouping

About This Resource

A complete Grade 2 math lesson pack on adding two-digit numbers with regrouping: base-ten blocks, trading 10 ones for 1 ten, the column method with a carried digit, adding tens and ones separately, estimating first and solving word problems within 100. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn what to do when the ones add up to 10 or more. They model 37 + 25 with base-ten blocks, trade ten ones for one ten rod, and record the trade with a small 1 above the tens column. They also use the partial sums method (30 + 20 = 50, 7 + 5 = 12, 50 + 12 = 62), estimate by rounding to check their answers, find and fix regrouping mistakes and solve story problems about stickers, books and points.

Grade 2 (ages 7–8) 50 minutes Addition place value regrouping estimation problem solving

Learning Objectives

  • Add two-digit numbers within 100 when the ones need regrouping.
  • Explain regrouping as trading 10 ones for 1 ten using base-ten blocks.
  • Estimate to check that an answer is reasonable and solve addition word problems.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and model 37 + 25 with base-ten blocks before showing the written method.
  • Use the flashcards for quick vocabulary practice, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Trading game: roll two dice, take that many ones cubes, and trade ten ones for a ten rod whenever you can. First to 100 wins.
  • Error detective: show worked sums where the carried 1 was forgotten; pairs find and fix the mistake.
  • Class store: price items between 15 and 49 cents and find the cost of buying two.

Differentiation

Support: use base-ten blocks and a place value mat for every question. Challenge: add three two-digit numbers and solve two-step problems.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check adding with regrouping (answer keys included). Use the rubric for explanations and word problems.

Teacher Tips

Always start with the ones. Ask "Do we have ten or more ones? Then we trade!" Saying the trade aloud stops children from writing 12 in the ones column.
