Box It Up: Multiplying Two-Digit by Two-Digit Numbers

About This Resource

A complete Grade 4 math lesson pack on multiplying two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers: estimating first, the area model, partial products, the standard algorithm with the zero placeholder, checking answers and solving real-world problems. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn to multiply numbers such as 34 × 26. They estimate first (30 × 30 = 900), split each factor into tens and ones in an area model to find four partial products (600 + 180 + 80 + 24 = 884), record the same partial products in a list, and then use the standard algorithm with a zero placeholder. They compare methods, find mistakes, check with estimates and solve problems about seats, eggs, pages and money.

Grade 4 (ages 9–10) 60 minutes Multiplication place value area models estimation problem solving

Learning Objectives

  • Multiply a two-digit number by a two-digit number using an area model and partial products.
  • Use the standard algorithm, explaining the zero placeholder.
  • Estimate products to check that answers are reasonable.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and model 34 × 26 with an area model before showing the written methods.
  • Use the flashcards for vocabulary and estimation, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Grid paper rectangles: students draw 13 × 12 on grid paper and cut it into four parts to see the partial products.
  • Method duel: half the class uses the area model and half the standard algorithm; compare answers.
  • Real-life prices: find the cost of 24 tickets at $15 each or 36 books at $12 each.

Differentiation

Support: use the area model with numbers up to 20 × 20 and give a times-table chart. Challenge: multiply three-digit by two-digit numbers and solve two-step problems.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check accuracy and estimation (answer keys included). Use the rubric for explanations and word problems.

Teacher Tips

Keep the area model on the board while teaching the standard algorithm. Point to the box each row of the algorithm matches, so the steps make sense instead of being memorized.
