Count the Squares: Area of Rectangles

About This Resource

A complete Grade 3 math lesson pack on the area of rectangles: counting unit squares, using rows and columns, multiplying length by width, square units, comparing areas and solving real-life area problems. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children learn that area is the amount of space inside a flat shape and is measured in square units. They count unit squares, see that a rectangle is made of equal rows, and discover that multiplying the length by the width gives the area. They find the areas of rectangles, compare areas, find a missing side and solve real-life problems about rugs, gardens and posters.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain that area is the space inside a shape, measured in square units.
  • Find the area of a rectangle by counting squares and by multiplying length by width.
  • Solve real-life problems involving the area of rectangles.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and cover a rectangle with sticky notes or paper squares.
  • Use the flashcards to teach the key words, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Sticky note cover: cover a book or desk with sticky notes and count them to find its area.
  • Grid paper designs: children draw rectangles with an area of 12 square units in as many ways as they can.
  • Area hunt: measure classroom objects with square tiles and order them from smallest to largest area.

Differentiation

Support: give grid paper and let children count squares for every question. Challenge: find the area of shapes made from two rectangles.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check calculating area (answer keys included). Use the rubric for explanations and problem solving.

Teacher Tips

Link area to arrays: a rectangle 4 squares long and 3 squares wide is 3 rows of 4. This helps children see why we multiply.
