Lesson Sequence

• Project the slides for whole-class teaching. Before the lesson, prepare counters, small objects, or the two Teachluma addition worksheets for this topic if you plan to move straight into practice afterward. Introduce the "Today's Goals" slide so students know what they are working toward, then work through the vocabulary and modelling slides together, pausing to ask students to repeat key words like "addend" and "sum." On the number line and ten frame slides, consider having students trace the hops or count the counters aloud with you. The guided practice slide works well with students answering as a class or in pairs before you reveal each answer. The "Your Turn" slide can be used for individual whiteboard practice, and the true-or-false review makes a quick formative check before moving to the worksheets — the answers are in the slide notes so you do not need to work them out live.

Classroom Activities

• Pair Speaking Challenge: after the "Ways to Add" slide, put students in pairs and give each pair two number cards that add to 10 or less. One partner says the addition sentence aloud ("4 plus 3 equals...") and the other partner answers using any strategy from the lesson, then explains out loud which strategy they used. Partners swap roles and repeat with a new pair of numbers.

Teacher Tips

Before moving to the number line slide, have a few students physically "hop" along a number line taped to the floor or drawn on the board. Students who can act out the hops with their whole body tend to transfer the strategy to paper much faster than students who only watch it demonstrated on the slide.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Pair students with a partner during the guided and independent practice slides, and allow the use of physical counters or fingers for every problem. Repeat key vocabulary (addend, sum, plus, equals) slowly and point to the matching part of the addition sentence on the slide each time it is used.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete the "Your Turn" slide independently using any strategy from the lesson, then briefly explain their chosen strategy to a partner.
CHALLENGE: Ask early finishers to write their own addition problem with a sum of exactly 10 and solve it using two different strategies from the lesson, then compare their two methods with a partner.

Assessment

Use the true-or-false review slide as a quick whole-class check — ask students to show thumbs up for "true" and thumbs down for "false" so you can see understanding at a glance before moving on. The "Your Turn" slide can also be collected as a quick written check if students record their answers on paper or mini whiteboards.
