Grade 1 Math Grading Rubric: Subtraction within 100 + Student Self-Check

About This Resource

A 1-page rubric that scores 6 skills (tens and ones, take away tens, take away ones, tens and ones together, problems and checking, math language) on 4 levels, plus a child "I can" self-check with stars.

Overview

This pack teaches Grade 1 children to subtract within 100 with no regrouping (every question has enough ones to take away). Lesson 1 takes away whole tens with ten rods, the hundred chart (up 1 row = take away 10) and number-line jumps of 10 (70 − 30 = 40). Lesson 2 takes away ones from a two-digit number and shows that the tens stay the same (47 − 5 = 42), counting back on a number line and moving left on the hundred chart. Lesson 3 subtracts two-digit numbers: tens first, then ones (58 − 23 = 35), with blocks, a place-value mat and an open number line. Lesson 4 solves take-away and "how many more?" word problems, finds missing numbers and checks each answer by adding. Every block picture, number line and hundred chart was drawn from the same data as the questions, and every answer was checked by computer. The English is short and repeated, for ESL / EFL learners. This listing covers the Grading Rubric only.

Learning Objectives

  • Say how many tens and ones are in a number to 100.
  • Take away whole tens (70 − 30 = 40) with blocks, the hundred chart and a number line.
  • Take away ones from a two-digit number and keep the tens the same (47 − 5 = 42).
  • Count back by ones and by tens on a number line and the hundred chart.
  • Subtract a two-digit number with no regrouping: tens first, then ones (58 − 23 = 35).
  • Solve take-away and "how many more?" word problems and find missing numbers.
  • Check a subtraction by adding (35 + 23 = 58

How to Use This Resource

  • Use the rubric with the worksheet, test, Take-Away Match and class talk. Circle one level per row and add the score (out of 24). Children colour the stars on the self-check at the end of Lesson 4.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Use the self-check at the start and end of the unit so children see their progress.
  • Listen during Take-Away Match to score the "Math language" row.

Differentiation

Support: Let children build every number with base-ten blocks, bundles of 10 straws or the paper blocks and really take them away. Start with numbers under 50 and with tens-only questions. Keep the hundred chart and the Subtraction Helper poster on the desk. Give sentence frames ("___ tens take away ___ tens is ___ tens." "___ are left."). Pair a child who is new to English with a partner who models the sentences.
Extension: Write 3 subtraction sentences with the answer 20 (the worksheet Challenge), make up a story for 68 − 25, find all the ways to take a number from 50 and leave 30, and check every answer by adding. Fast finishers can play Take Away Challenge (Number Line or Story Problems mode).

Assessment

6 criteria × 4 levels (Excellent 4, Good 3, Developing 2, Needs Practice 1) = 24 points, with a score guide and space for a teacher comment.

Teacher Tips

The most common mistake in this unit is taking ones away from the tens: 56 − 3 = 26 instead of 53. Before every take-away, ask "Is it tens or ones?" and let children build the number with blocks or bundles of 10 straws and really take the blocks away. Teach one sentence and use it all week: "We take away ones, so the tens stay the same." Keep the hundred chart on the desk for the whole unit: up 1 row is take away 10, left 1 is take away 1. Every question in this pack has enough ones, so children never need to break a ten. If a child asks about 52 − 7, praise the question and say it is the next step (Grade 2 regrouping).
