Overview

The worksheet is organized into four activities that build on each other. Student Task

Print one copy per student or display the PDF for a shared first example before independent work. For Activity 1, model the first number line problem on the board, drawing the hops step by step and saying each number aloud as you land on it. Activity 2 can be introduced by asking students what number is missing and having them check their answer by saying the full sentence aloud ("5 plus 3 equals 8"). For Activity 3, read each word problem aloud as a class first, since the language may be new to English learners, and ask a student to retell the story in their own words before solving it. Activity 4 works well as an independent check or a partner activity where students discuss why a statement is true or false before circling their answer. Collect the worksheet or check it as a class using the answer key.

Classroom Use

Story Swap Speaking Activity: after completing Activity 3, have students work in pairs to invent one new word problem of their own, using a setting from their own life (their house, their favourite snack, a game they play). Partners swap problems, solve each other's, and check the answer together by explaining their number sentence out loud.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Provide a printed number line strip or counters for Activity 1 and 2, read the Activity 3 word problems aloud together as a class, and allow students to answer Activity 4 orally with a partner instead of writing independently.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all four activities independently, writing their own number sentences for the word problems in Activity 3 without teacher support.
CHALLENGE: For Activity 3, ask students to change one number in each word problem and solve their new version, then explain how the answer changed and why.

Answer Key & Assessment

Completed worksheet checked against the answer key. The true-or-false activity in particular gives a fast way to spot students who can compute correctly but still make errors when judging someone else's addition sentence.
