Overview

The worksheet moves students through four short, connected activities. Print one copy per student, or share the PDF for digital display if working through the first activity as a class before independent work. Introduce Activity 1 by modelling the first problem on the board: count the pictures in each group aloud with students, then write the addition sentence together. Students can then complete the remaining Activity 1 problems independently or with a partner. For Activity 2, remind students that any picture is acceptable as long as the count matches the numbers in the sentence — stars, dots, and tally marks are all fine. Activity 3 works well with a physical ten frame and counters on a student's desk before they draw on the page. Activity 4 can be completed independently or checked as a class by reading the sentences aloud and having students say the matching sum. Collect the worksheet to check understanding, or have students swap papers and check a partner's work against the answer key.

Classroom Use

Counting Circle Warm-Up: before handing out the worksheet, gather students in a circle. Call out a number sentence such as "3 plus 4," and have that many students step into the middle of the circle in two small groups before counting aloud together to find the total. This gives students a physical, whole-body version of Activity 1 before they see it on paper.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Provide physical counters so students can build each group before counting, reduce Activity 1 to the first four problems, and allow students to use tally marks instead of detailed drawings in Activity 2.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all four activities independently, checking their own matching lines in Activity 4 by adding each pair themselves.
CHALLENGE: Ask students to write one additional addition sentence of their own for each activity type (a picture problem, a drawing problem, and a ten-frame problem) and swap with a partner to solve.

Answer Key & Assessment

Completed worksheet checked against the answer key. The teacher can also walk around during Activity 2 to observe whether students' drawings match the given number sentence, which shows understanding even before the written sum is checked.
